About the Author

I am Douglas Hammer, a retired US Air Force colonel with over 26 years of decorated service. Having led airmen on the front lines in Operations DESERT SHIELD/STORM and IRAQI/ENDURING FREEDOM, I witnessed firsthand the unifying power of a common code, such as the US Air Force Airman’s Creed, in uniting a diverse group of Americans during the most difficult times.

After retiring from the Air Force in 2014, my career of leadership and vision continued in the private sector as a consultant, focusing on helping people and organizations become the best versions of themselves by establishing cultures and business processes that maximize their resources. For over 35 years, I have committed my career to advancing this vision, building successful teams, and creating impactful solutions for commercial and federal markets.

The American Citizen’s Creed is the culmination of my life’s work: a powerful and necessary text born of my lifelong passion and my desire to offer a concise, nonpartisan standard to help America become the best version of itself.

My motivation for writing this book comes down to:

  1. My deep belief in and love for freedom.

  2. My passion for helping others become the best versions of themselves.

  3. My agreement with President Ronald Reagan’s warning that freedom is always just one generation away from being lost.

  4. The growing polarization and divide I see in our country today.
